Course Description

This course is to provide a comprehensive and contemporary introduction to the diverse discipline of inorganic chemistry focusing on coordination hemistry, organometallic chemistry, metal clusters, solid state chemistry and achievements in recent research which includes 1) the necessary skills to understand the theoretical basis of structure and bonding; 2) the physical and chemical properties of inorganic compounds; 3) fundamental reactivity, unusual structures and practical applications in organic synthesis and industrial catalysis of organometallic compounds. In the end, I hope that you will appreciate this very important and renascent chemical discipline.

Syllabus

Introduction to Inorganic Chemistry Simple bonding theory, molecular symmetry, molecular orbitals, physical techniques in inorganic chemistry; Coordination Chemistry Structures and isomers; Ligand field theory; Electronic spectra; Reaction and mechanisms; Organometallic Chemistry Structure and bonding: general properties of the ligands and metals, metal-ligand complexes; Survey of organometal l ic complexes according to ligand: dative ligands, covalent ligands; Typical organometallic reactions: ligand substitution reactions, oxidative addition and reduction elimination reactions, migration insertion reactions, elimination reactions, nucleophilic attack reactions, Electrophilic attack eactions.
Organometallic catalysis; Special topics; Non-metal cluster; Metal cluster and metal-metal bond; Solid State Chemistry.
